Photo Advances in New Cell Phones
Today in Walt Mossberg’s Personal Technology section of the Wall Street Journal Sarmad Ali reviews advances in cell phone photo technology. One of the new cell phone/cameras that Sarmad reviews is the Sony Ericsson’s W800 Walkman. He reports that, “…I couldn’t tell the difference between them (W800 Photos) and pictures I took with my Canon PowerShot S70, a 7.1-megapixel digital camera”. The W800 has a “panorama” feature that will combine 3 shots to make one panorama.
I think it is a significant trend that camera manufacturers are including in-camera panorama stitching into so many new cameras. The significance for real estate photography is that in-camera panorama stitching is being offered as an alternative to wide-angle lens. As a camera manufacturer is easier and cheaper and more flexible to automatically stitch sequential frames in the camera than it is to provide a wide-angle lens.
Is this a good thing for the real estate shooter? It’s too soon to tell. Having panoramas come directly out of the camera instead of having to stitch them with software changes a lot. It may well be a way to reduce the cost of a camera suitable for real estate photography. I’m not ready to get rid of my 16-35mm zoom yet.
